Compare Documents

Find exactly what changed between two versions of a contract, letter or report. Works with PDF, Word and plain text, and highlights every added and removed word.

Compare Documents tool

Original

Changed version

Your documents are never uploaded. They're read and compared inside your browser.

How to use it

  1. Add the original. Choose the first version (PDF, Word or text), or paste its text.
  2. Add the changed version. Choose the newer version the same way. The comparison appears straight away.
  3. Review the changes. Removed words are red and struck through, added words are green. Use Next change to jump through them, or tick Only changes.
  4. Save a report. Print it, or choose Save as PDF in the print dialog, to keep a record.

For the best result

  • Before you sign. Compare the contract you agreed with the one sent for signing; small edits are easy to miss.
  • Different layouts are fine. With Ignore spacing on, re-wrapped lines and page breaks don't show up as changes.
  • Scanned PDFs need text. A scanned PDF is only pictures of text, so there's nothing to compare. Use the digital version.
  • Mixed up the order? Tap the swap button to switch the original and the changed version.

Questions

How do I compare two PDF files?

Choose the original PDF on the left and the new one on the right. The tool reads the text from both and highlights every word that was added or removed.

Can I compare Word documents?

Yes, .docx files work, and you can compare a Word file with a PDF or with pasted text. Old .doc files need saving as .docx first.

Why does it say there's no text in my PDF?

Scanned PDFs are images of pages, without real text. Compare the original digital files, or paste the text instead.

Does formatting count as a change?

No. Only the words are compared. Bold, fonts and layout aren't, and with Ignore spacing on, line breaks aren't either.

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Both documents are read and compared inside your browser. Nothing reaches our servers or anyone else's.

Is there a size limit?

Long documents work fine. Two completely different documents are refused, because a comparison wouldn't be meaningful.
