How to use it
- Enter the expiry date. It's on your passport's photo page. Add the issue date too if you're going to Europe.
- Pick where you're going. Then enter the dates you arrive and leave. The tool applies that destination's rule.
- Read the result. You'll see whether the passport is valid long enough, how many days you have to spare, and when to renew.
For the best result
- Renew early. Renewals can take weeks or months. Starting about 9 months before expiry keeps every trip open.
- Airlines check too. If your passport is too short, the airline can refuse to board you, even with a ticket and visa.
- Transit counts. Changing planes in another country can bring that country's rules into play as well.
- Never miss a date. Memento reminds you about passports, visas, IDs and warranties automatically.
Questions
What is the 6-month passport rule?
Many countries only let you in if your passport is still valid for at least 6 months, counted from the day you arrive (or, for some, from the day you leave). If it has less time left, you can be refused boarding or entry, even with a visa.
How long must my passport be valid for Europe (Schengen)?
At least 3 months beyond the day you plan to leave the Schengen area, and the passport must have been issued within the last 10 years. Enter the issue date to check both.
Do I need 6 months for the UK, Canada or Australia?
Usually not: for visitors, these countries generally require the passport to be valid for the whole stay. Rules can differ by nationality and visa, so confirm before travelling.
What about the United States?
The general rule is 6 months beyond your stay, but citizens of many countries are exempt and only need the passport valid for the length of the stay. Check whether your country is on the exemption list.
When should I renew my passport?
A good habit is to start about 9 months before it expires. That keeps you clear of 6-month rules and leaves time for processing.
Is this official advice?
No. It applies the common rules for visitors to help you plan, but entry rules change and depend on your nationality and visa. Always confirm with the embassy or your airline.
