Document Tamper Check

Got a bank statement, payslip, certificate or receipt and want to know if it's genuine? Check a PDF or photo for the traces editing usually leaves behind.

Document Tamper Check tool

Your file is never uploaded. It's checked inside your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose the file. Pick the PDF or photo you were sent. Use the original file, not a screenshot or a re-saved copy.
  2. Read the result. Red items are strong signs of editing, amber ones are worth a closer look, and each one says why it matters.
  3. Look at the marks. In PDFs, text set in a different font from the rest is boxed in red on the page. For photos, the heatmap shows areas that behave differently.
  4. Confirm at the source. If something looks wrong, ask the bank, employer or office that issued it to confirm the details.

For the best result

  • Ask for the original. Forwarding through chat apps or printing to PDF wipes most traces. The file as it was downloaded tells you the most.
  • Fonts give edits away. When someone changes an amount or a name in a PDF editor, the new text often ends up in a slightly different font.
  • Later saves. Statements and certificates from a system are usually created in one go. Extra saves mean someone opened the file in an editor.
  • Signed PDFs. If the PDF carries a digital signature, a PDF reader can tell you whether anything changed after signing. That's the strongest check there is.

Questions

How can I tell if a PDF has been edited?

Choose the PDF here. The tool looks for later saves inside the file, editing software in its details, a change date long after the creation date, words in a different font from the rest, extra copies of the same font, and marks added on top of the page.

Can it prove a document is fake?

No tool can. It shows the traces editing usually leaves. A clean result is a good sign but not proof, and a warning can have an innocent cause, like a form being filled in. Confirm important documents with whoever issued them.

How do I check if a photo has been edited?

Choose the photo. The tool reads its hidden details (camera, editing software, dates) and makes an error level analysis heatmap, where pasted or retouched areas often look different from the rest of the picture.

What is error level analysis?

The photo is saved again as a JPEG and compared with the original. Parts that were edited or pasted in usually compress differently, so they glow brighter or darker than similar surfaces nearby.

Why are there no camera details in my photo?

Screenshots, messaging apps and most websites strip them. On its own, missing details don't mean the photo was edited.

Is my document uploaded?

No. Everything is checked inside your browser, so it's safe to use with bank statements and other private papers.
