How to use it
- Type the secret. A password, a crypto wallet's recovery phrase, a safe combination, or a short note on where things are.
- Choose the pieces. For example 3 pieces, any 2 needed: you can lose one piece and still recover, and nobody can do it alone.
- Hand them out. Download the PDF and give each page to a different person, or keep them in different places.
- Recover when needed. Open this page, choose Recover, and paste or scan enough pieces. The secret appears straight away.
For the best result
- For your family. Give pieces to a partner, a sibling and a lawyer, so your family can reach important accounts if something happens to you.
- Crypto recovery phrases. Split a seed phrase instead of keeping it in one place where it can be stolen, lost or burned.
- Test it once. Before handing out the pieces, recover the secret from two of them to make sure everything works.
- Write the rules down. Tell each person how many pieces are needed and where to recover them, so they know what to do.
Questions
How does secret splitting work?
It uses Shamir's secret sharing, a well-known method from 1979. The secret becomes points on a random curve; any chosen number of pieces is enough to rebuild it, and fewer give no information at all, not even a hint.
Is one piece safe if someone finds it?
Yes. Below the number of pieces needed, the pieces reveal nothing about the secret. Someone would need enough pieces together.
What happens if I lose a piece?
As long as enough pieces remain, you can still recover the secret. That's why 3 pieces with any 2 needed is a popular choice.
Can I recover it without this website?
The method is standard, so other Shamir tools with the same settings can rebuild it, though their piece formats differ. Keeping a copy of this page saved works offline too.
Is my secret uploaded?
No. Splitting and recovering happen entirely inside your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers or anyone else's.
What can I split?
Any text up to 1000 bytes: passwords, recovery phrases, PINs, combinations or short instructions.
