Encrypted Document Kit

Lock important files and notes with a password into a single file. It opens in any web browser, even offline, and only someone with the password can see what's inside.

Password

  • Files—
  • Kit size—

If you forget the password, nobody can open the kit, not even us. Store it somewhere safe.

Files are encrypted on your device with AES-256 before anything is saved. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Add files and notes. Pick the documents to protect: ID and passport copies, certificates, insurance, medical papers. Add notes like emergency contacts if you like.
  2. Choose a strong password. Use a few unrelated words or a long phrase. Enter it twice.
  3. Create and save the kit. You get one .html file. Keep it on your phone, a USB stick or in cloud storage, or send it to family.
  4. Open it anywhere. Open the file in any web browser and enter the password. If a phone won't open it, use Open a kit on this page.

For the best result

  • Share the password separately. Send the kit by email or chat, but tell the password in person or by phone.
  • An emergency kit for family. Put copies of everyone's IDs, insurance and medical info in one kit and give it to someone you trust.
  • Keep two copies. One on your phone and one in cloud storage, so a lost phone doesn't mean lost papers.
  • Update it now and then. Make a new kit when a document is renewed; old kits keep working with their own password.

Questions

How secure is the kit?

Files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, with a key made from your password using PBKDF2-SHA256 and 600,000 rounds, all by your browser's built-in Web Crypto. Without the password the contents can't be read. A strong password matters most.

Can you recover my password?

No. We never see your files or your password, so nobody can recover them. Write the password down somewhere safe.

What does the person receiving it need?

Just a web browser. They open the .html file and type the password. No app or account is needed.

Why won't my phone open the file?

Some phones show HTML files as text or won't run them from the Files app. Open mementoapp.online/tools/encrypt-files, choose Open a kit and pick the file: it's unlocked on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Can I email or WhatsApp the kit?

Yes. It's a normal file. Some email services limit attachment size, so keep big kits under about 20 MB, or share through cloud storage.

What is visible without the password?

Only the kit name and the hint, if you add them. File names, notes and the files themselves are all encrypted.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free, with no account.
