Rules change and offices can be strict. Check the official photo requirements before you print or upload.

How to use it

  1. Take or choose a photo. Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, eyes open, in even light. Ask someone else to take it from about 1–1.5 m away.
  2. Pick the country or document. The tool sets the photo size and the head size that document needs, and makes the background plain.
  3. Check the guides. Top of your head on the upper line, chin inside the green band, face on the centre line. Drag or zoom if needed; the checks turn green.
  4. Download and print. Download the digital photo for online forms, or a 4 × 6 in or A4 sheet to print at 100% (actual size) and cut out.

For the best result

  • Even light on your face. Face a window. Avoid shadows on your face or behind you.
  • Neutral expression. Mouth closed, eyes open and looking at the camera.
  • No glasses, no hat. Many countries no longer accept glasses; religious head coverings are usually allowed if your face is fully visible.
  • Printing at a shop. Ask for a 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) photo print of the sheet at actual size, then cut along the grey lines.

Questions

What size is a US passport photo?

2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), with the head 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to the top of the head, on a white or off-white background. For online visa forms the digital photo is 600 × 600 pixels, up to 240 KB. Choose "United States" and the tool sets all of this.

What size is a UK, Schengen or Australian passport photo?

35 × 45 mm. The head (chin to top of head) should be about 29–34 mm for the UK and 32–36 mm for Schengen visas and Australian passports. Check the exact rules for your application.

Can I really change the background to white?

Yes. The tool finds you in the photo and replaces everything behind you with a plain colour, right on your device. Choose white, cream, light grey or light blue to match the rules.

How do I print passport photos?

Download the 4 × 6 in sheet and print it as a normal 4 × 6 (10 × 15 cm) photo at a print shop or at home, at actual size (100%), not "fit to page". Then cut along the grey lines.

Will the photo be accepted?

The tool gets the size, head height and background right, but offices also check things a tool can't, like expression, lighting and glasses. Follow the official rules for your country, and check the photo carefully before you submit it.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. Face detection, background removal and the photo itself are all made inside your browser. The first time, the tools download about 20 MB, which your browser then keeps.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no watermark.
